Farther and Farther

You said that you'd love me forever,
But then said you didn't know what love was.
You said that you weren't good for me,
But what was bad for me was your leaving.
And I'm so afraid,
Because I know you meant what you said,
And I don't know how to help you,
Because every time I try to give you wings,
You only fall
Farther and farther.

You didn't see me at the cafe,
But I saw you;
I saw things you'd never want me to see.
I remember how your eyes
Used to shine when you smiled;
I remember you used to stand
So confidently.
But now you weren't standing;
You were slouched over a coffee,
Tears sneaking from your eyes.
You were pretending to do the newspaper puzzles,
So the blonde at the next table would leave you alone.
You said that leaving would be
Better, so much better,
For me,
But I'm no better off,
And look at you!

You said that you'd love me forever,
But then you said you didn't know what love was.
You said that you weren't good for me,
But what was bad for me was your leaving.
And I'm so afraid,
Because I know you meant what you said,
And I don't know how to help you,
Because every time I try to give you wings,
You only fall
Farther and farther.
